新區地處銅川市南部原區,本區地形呈波浪起伏,由東、西兩條原面組成,中有趙氏河相隔。東原東西寬4—6公里,西原東西寬3公里,呈東北——西南走向,原面比較平坦,整個原面海拔高度710—750米,趙氏河谷海拔600—660米,與臺原高差100米左右。原面邊緣因水流沖刷,形成參差不齊的陡壁及破碎的溝壑。
新區屬暖溫帶大陸性半干旱半濕潤易旱氣候區,四季冷暖干濕分明,冬季受蒙古極地大陸氣團控制,寒冷干燥,雨雪偏小。春季溫度回升,天氣多變,乍暖乍寒,常有大風、霜凍、沙塵及春旱發生。夏季受太平洋副熱帶海洋氣團控制,出現高溫與雷陣雨天氣,常有冰雹及伏旱發生。秋季降溫較快,多連陰雨,晚秋天氣較晴朗,無霜期長,降水較少。
太陽輻射平均年總量為127.61千卡/平方厘米。日照總時數2268.6小時,日照百分率達51%。一般是夏季與春末最長,占全年總時數的40%。氣候溫和,夏無酷暑,冬無嚴寒。年平均氣溫12.3℃,7月份最高25.0℃,1月最低零下1.7℃。極端溫度歷史記錄:最高39.7℃(1972年7月);最低零下16.0℃(1967年1月)。年平均降水量為567.8毫米。最大降水量為1983年821.8毫米,最小降水量為1986年347.7毫米,相差474.1毫米。月平均降水7月最多為110.5毫米,月最少為5.0毫米。四季降水冬季最少(18.4毫米),春季次之(122.6毫米),秋季較多(180.7毫米),夏季最多(246.3毫米)。降水量最多集中在7—9月份。每年降水量日數平均91天。夏季29天,秋季27天,春季24天,冬季11天。最長降水日數為19天,出現在1962年9月22日—10月10日。
新區境內有兩條河流。趙氏河源干耀州區呂村河、陳村河兩支流,于雙岔河會流后形成干流,入富平縣境石川河,全長33公里,總流域面積224.1平方公里。多年平均經流量1487萬立方米,流量0.25秒·立方米。濁峪河發源于小丘鄉北部之安溝村,南流入三原縣匯于清峪河,全長22公里,流域面積85.8平方公里,每年平均經流量550萬立方米,流量0.07秒立方米。
新區大部分用水由桃曲坡水庫補充供給。桃曲坡水庫距新區15公里,總庫容量5720萬立方米,由于多年泥沙淤積,有效庫容降至3095萬立方米。
玉皇閣水庫位于趙氏河上游,設計庫容1590萬平方米,由于泥沙淤嚴重,僅有庫容464萬立方米。
新區地下水儲量豐富。一級階地及東側原邊臺地,屬于強富水區。單井涌水量為2000—3000噸/日,最大可達9000噸/日,東原南部屬干強富水或較強富水等級,單孔出水量500—1000噸/日,或大于1000噸/日。
據有關地質勘察資料,新區周圍地下埋有一定貯量的煤,面積51.42平方公里。平均煤的厚度2.58米。儲量1.8億噸。
趙氏河、濁峪河流域河灘地萬余畝可種植蓮菜,建立魚塘,開展多種經營,河道兩岸山坡可栽植雜果。
新區自然災害有旱、水、風、蟲、凍、雹、地震等多種,尤以旱災次數最多,危害最大。民國四年(1915)至三十四年(1945)30年內,大旱10次平均3年一次。解放后,據氣象部門統計,1962年—1981年20年內,共出現干旱59次,平均每年近3次。其中百日、雙百日大旱5次,平均4年一次。最長的大旱207天,出現在1979年9月29日至1980年4月22日。水災多由暴雨及連陰雨造成。1964—1983年20年內,嚴重水災出現7次,平均近三年一次。雹災每年平均降雹4次,最多的1973年達到11次。時間最早在4月下旬,最晚在10月下旬,而以7月份為最多。風災以大風引起的沙塵暴最為嚴重。每年在三四月間清晨發生,往往持續1—2日。霜凍與蟲害雖較普遍,但危害較小。地震雖發生多次,但多屬輕震、微震。
